Manchester City legend Yaya Toure has revealed Manchester United legend that used to strike fear in him.

Manchester City icon Yaya Toure is revered for his brilliant displays on the pitch during his time with the Cityzens and Spanish giants Barcelona.

For Toure, a player who had it all in his locker, it is hard to imagine that the Ivorian had players who gave him sleepless nights.

Toure has recently revealed that Paul Scholes was one of the few players who truly struck fear into him during his career, admitting he was relieved not to face the Manchester United legend in the 2009 UEFA Champions League final.

Speaking candidly on a recent episode of Rio Ferdinand Presents, Toure opened up about the nerves he experienced playing in an unfamiliar role during one of the biggest matches of his career.

Then at Barcelona, Toure was deployed as a center-back in the final against Manchester United due to a defensive crisis at the club.

“I have the courage, of course, but to be honest, I have to tell you the truth, I was really scared,” said the Ivorian.

“I was scared because, first, it was the final, we were playing against a great team, and secondly, it was my first time playing center-back in a Champions League final.”

Toure admitted that while the occasion itself was daunting, the real relief came from the absence of United's midfield maestro Paul Scholes, as well as Darren Fletcher.

“Lucky for us, Scholes was not involved, and Fletcher was not involved in that period as well. Because I think those players, they can put a ball behind me, and that was the problem, you know.”

Toure and Scholes faced each other seven times over the course of their careers, including four memorable Manchester Derbies.

Out of those four encounters, Toure’s Manchester City side won two, drew one, and lost one.

In total, across all competitions and clubs, Toure only lost twice to Scholes in their seven meetings.

Despite his impressive record, Toure’s comments highlight the high regard in which he held Scholes, a player renowned for his passing vision, technical brilliance, and ability to control the tempo of a game.

The 2009 final ended in a 2-0 victory for Barcelona, with goals from Samuel Eto’o and Lionel Messi.
