After Memphis' departure, Barcelona's Xavi Hernandez wants the club to invest in January
After winning the SuperCopa Espana and qualifying for the quarterfinals of the Copa del Rey in the same week, Xavi Hernandez is not allowing the success to blind him to the pressing concerns he has in his squad.
The ex-Barcelona midfielder has made his feelings known about potential arrivals at the club during the January transfer window and the need for the club to strengthen its squad where possible.
Xavi has done an okay job with previous player investments
Speaking to reporters after Barcelona’s emphatic 5-0 win over Cueta in the Copa del Rey, Xavi said while he would not consider it the end of the world if the board were unable to find solutions in the January window, he recognises the need for the club to sign players to keep their quest for titles going.
Xavi, who has guided Barcelona to the top of La Liga in the 2022/23 season, oversaw a busy summer transfer window at the start of the season, which saw Barcelona splash €153 million on seven new signings for the first team.
Memphis’ departure means Barcelona need some cover
For much of the season, Xavi has enjoyed the luxury of a fairly large squad that has coped well with injuries barring their European group stage exit, but they have had to deal with the departure of Memphis Depay to Atletico Madrid, which depletes their attacking options by one.
When asked about a possible replacement for Memphis, Xavi said, “It wouldn’t be a tragedy if no one came, but I would like to strengthen the squad.”
With Barcelona’s forwards apart from Robert Lewandowski struggling to find the net this season, it's reasonable for Xavi to expect another option to come in if he needs it.
