Elsewhere at the Police Sacco Stadium, Police Bullets secured a 3-0 comfortable win against KISPED, to begin their title defense on the front foot.
Vihiga Queens coach Boniface Nyamunyamu believes their 1-0 win against Ulinzi Starlets in the Kenya Women's Premier League season opener at Moi Stadium, Kisumu, on Saturday is a big motivation to the team in their bid to regain the WPL title.
Providence Mukola gave the Vihiga County-based side maximum point with an 89th minute strike as the former CECAFA club champions laid down a marker to their 2024-2025 season.
Nyamunyamu, who guided Vihiga to the title last year, said the win was invaluable and that the women's game has developed if their match was any barometer. "It's a big motivation being the first match of the season. We knew it was always going to be difficult against a tough opponent in Ulinzi but the girls showed grit and deserved the three points," the tactician said.
"We take on Zetech Sparks in our next match and the most important thing is to maintain the tempo. Women football has come off age if today's performance is any barometer".
Despite losing many players to foreign leagues, Nyamunyamu maintained that the five-time WPL champions have enough firepower in attack to help the club achieve it's set targets. "Surrendering the WPL title to Kenya Police Bullets last season was a bitter pill to swallow. We will do everything in our power to ensure that we are crowned champions at the end of the season."
Elsewhere at the Police Sacco Stadium, Police Bullets secured a 3-0 comfortable win against KISPED, to begin their title defense on the front foot. Lydia Akoth gave the law enforcers 1-0 39th minute lead before a second half brace from Rebecca Okwaro sealed the victory.
In another match, Kibera Soccer Women beat Bungoma Queens 2-0. Nyakoa Amina and Anna Arusi scored for the slam queens. Trinity Starlets beat Bunyore Starlets 3-0 at the Rift Valley Institute of Science and Technology RVIST.
