The 24-year-old has criticised Antonio Conte's repetitive training methods as he heaped praise on Ange Postecoglou.

Harambee Stars prospect Djed Spence has hit out at former Tottenham Hotspur boss Antonio Conte for his ‘repetitive’ kind of training routine.

Djed Spence joined Tottenham Hotspur on July 19, 2022, on a five-year contract and worked with Antonio Conte for slightly over a year before moving to Serie A club Napoli in March 2023.

Speaking on the Rio Ferdinand Presents podcast, the 24-year-old described Antonio Conte’s training routine as boring compared to Tottenham’s new boss Ange Postecoglou.

He revealed that Ange Postecoglou tries bringing in new drills in training unlike Conte who would stick to the same routine for a long time.

Djed Spence added that he certainly feels the difference in training and seemed to like what Ange does compared to how Antonio Conte used to train them.

“I feel like with Conte it was very repetitive, we literally did the same session every day, literally, there was no change,” Djed Spence said.

“With Ange, it’s a bit different, we change, we do certain drills every single day but it’s a bit different.

“Whether it’s a different passing drill or a different attack and he switches up quite a bit. With Conte, it was just like this is it.”

He added that there is not much room for discussion when it comes to training and most of the time, players are not allowed to question what the coach does.

However, there are a few exceptions, from the top players, who are at liberty to ask questions and make minor changes.

“We’ve got a system but we have players that can kind of not come out of the system but they have a bit of freedom. We’ve got quality players that matter but he’s got his own quality to produce a bit of magic,” Djed Spence added.

Djed Spence joined Tottenham Hotspur when he was just 21 and at the time, Antonio Conte was not one of his role models owing to some of the words he said concerning the new signing.

To date, Djed Spence struggles to understand why the former Juventus manager would be so hard on him at such a young age.

He revealed that his time at Tottenham Hotspur under Antonio Conte was like walking on eggshells, insisting that Conte was always angry.

"It wasn’t a nice feeling. Especially as I was coming to the club on a high, I was confident, I was buzzing, had just won promotion,” Djed Spence revealed.

"Then it was like running into a brick wall. It shattered my confidence a bit, obviously, I’m young. It’s not nice to hear.

"Even if you did the right things, you were like, ‘Did I do the right thing?’ Cos he’s not really a complimenting guy.”

When Antonio Conte was manager, Djed Spence never got a chance to play at Tottenham and spent most of his time away on loans.

He was first loaned out to French club Rennes and even after Antonio Conte was succeeded by Ange Postecoglou, he did not get playing time.

He went out on further loans to Leeds United and Serie A club Genoa and finally made his Tottenham debut in 2024, two-and-a-half years after joining the club.
