The Nigeria international has agreed new terms with the Foxes after his previous contract expired at the end of June.

Leicester City and Nigeria midfielder Wilfred Ndidi has pointed out why he chose to stay with the Foxes.

Ndidi extends Leicester City stay

The 27-year-old’s old deal ran out at the end of June, with the Super Eagles midfield man linked with a host of clubs across Europe and a move to Saudi Arabia, but he has instead signed for three more years with the option of an additional 12 months.

Ndidi, part of the side to win the FA Cup and Community Shield in 2021 and last season’s Championship, has made 273 appearances since signing from Genk midway through the 2016-17 campaign.

Staying will now see the Nigerian, who has played 58 times for the West African nation, add to his over 200 matches for the Foxes.

Why Ndidi is staying at Leicester

Speaking to the club after agreeing to the deal, Ndidi revealed that a conversation with new boss Steve Cooper, having another shot at competing in the Premier League and, importantly, a settled life in the East Midlands made his decision to remain in situ straightforward.

“I feel great, I feel excited, I feel at home,” the 27-year-old said. “That’s the most important thing. I feel really happy to continue with the Club. My family is settled here and everyone back home, when they say Ndidi, they say Leicester also!

“It’s really amazing to be a part of this journey going forward. It was quite an easy [decision] because, as I said, my family is settled here. My daughter’s going to school, it’s easy and relaxed. I know my family is sorted and I can just focus on football.

“I’ve had a chance to speak with [Cooper]. I spoke to him during the holidays when he came in. He had some good ideas to share with me, so it was really, really, really amazing and I’m looking forward to working with him. He’s a great guy, he’s funny. I look forward to working with him, it’s very exciting.

“It’s very exciting [to be back in the Premier League]. We know this is where we belong. We’ll try our best to keep it that way. We want to be here and we want to stay here.”

What comes next?

Ndidi could add to his 192 Premier League appearances when Leicester host Tottenham Hotspur at the King Power Stadium on August 19 to start their season.
