Championship side Wigan Athletic have been deducted three points after the club failed to pay the players’ March salaries in a timely manner.
Wigan have now failed to pay their players' salaries on time for the fourth time since being promoted to the Championship and this has caused the English Football League to take action by deducting three points.
Wigan Athletic docked points for failure to pay players
The punishment will see them fall into deeper trouble as they sit eight points from safety.
Wigan are owned by Bahrain-based Phoenix 2021 limited and have struggled with liquidity issues but remain confident they will be resolved as soon as possible.
Abdulrahman Al-Jasmi, the Wigan owner has failed to deposit an amount equal to 125 per cent of the club’s forecast monthly wage bill in a designated club account, which constitutes a breach of the agreement signed with the EFL.
An EFL statement read:
“Wigan Athletic has, with immediate effect, been deducted three points from the 2022-23 Championship table after the Club failed to pay player salaries again in March 2023.
“The club had previously been charged and sanctioned for failing to adhere to the terms of the standard contracts that were in force between the club and its players in the months of June 2022, July 2022, and October 2022.
“This latest infringement by the club to meet its obligations means the terms of the agreed decision the club entered into with the EFL in January 2023 has been breached and the application of the suspended sporting sanction has been automatically triggered.”
Wigan are bottom of the Championship table with 34 points from 38 games.
