Boniface rewarded again
The 22-year-old is on the verge of what would be his third consecutive Rookie of the Month award since he moved to Bayer Leverkusen in the summer.
Boniface has not taken his feet off the gas following that celebrated move, with his goals and assists taking Leverkusen to the top of the Bundesliga table.
His performances so far have seen him pick the award for August and September and could be named for the third straight month later this November.
Why he was nominated
According to the Bundesliga website, the Nigeria Super Eagles is back as a nominee as the most prolific contributor of goals for Leverkusen in Germany.
"In three league games during the month, Boniface found the net in the Matchday 7 derby defeat of Cologne and teed up a strike for the league leaders in their 2-1 win over Wolfsburg,” the Bundesliga report noted. “
That gave him 10 goal involvements before Matchday 10 and makes him the most prolific contributor to the lightning start Xabi Alonso's team have made,” it added.
In terms of his overall contributions, Boniface had a league-high, 15 attempts which took his tally for the season to 54, more than Bundesliga’s top scorer, Harry Kane (36).
Also, the talented striker was rewarded for his consistency in the month in review with his first international goal for Nigeria.
Boniface’s competition
Standing in the way of the Nigerian and his quest for another Rookie award are two equally superb talents in the Bundesliga.
Mainz’s Gruda is regarded by the Bundesliga as the ‘beacon of hope’ for his struggling side. The 19-year-old has been nominated after he scored one and assisted another, although he only has two starts in seven matches before October.
He also leads his team, during the month in view, in pre-assists and shots, with five each.
Meanwhile, Xavi Simons of Leipzig could be the man to deny Boniface a third win following the Dutchman’s impressive month.
This will be Simons’ third nomination and he comes into this one with three goals and four assists contributed for his club.
He currently sits at the top of the assists chart with Bayern Munich’s legend, Thomas Muller, the only player to have provided more assists.
