Joshua Zirkzee was not signed by Erik Ten Hag during the summer transfer window for Manchester United due to concerns over the player's fitness, which reportedly left the Dutchman unhappy.

Erik Ten Hag did not want to sign Joshua Zirkzee in the summer transfer window for Manchester United owing to the player's fitness which left the Dutchman unhappy according to reports.

The Netherlands striker traded Serie A side Bologna for the English Premier League riches by inking a deal with the Old Trafford outfit. However, according to the Daily Mail, Ten Hag's compatriot was not his main target.

Ten Hag, who was sacked last week after a disastrous start to the 2024-25 EPL season, wanted experienced Brighton forward Danny Welbeck to shoulder the goal-scoring burden with Rasmus Hojlund. The 33-year-old was a handful for the Seagulls last season and would walk in straight into the starting lineup but United opted against the move.

Zirkzee, 23, arrived for a fee of £36.5million but he was a stone overweight, leaving Ten Hag frustrated. Zirkzee was the hero as he came off the bench to score his first United goal on his debut in the 1-0 win over Fulham.

However, the player has not scored since then, as a result he lost his place in the first 11. The 3-0 loss against Tottenham in September was the last time Zirkzee started for Manchester United.

The Red Devils' woes have been influenced significantly by their misfiring attack, with the side stuck on just nine goals from ten league matches.
