KCCA FC forward Simon Kankonde Tshisungu has had a debut season to forget in the Uganda Premier League.

The gigantic forward was highly billed to lead the charges at the Naguru-based club in the 2022/23 season as it strives to end its search for significant silverware in three consecutive seasons.

He was unveiled last year in July and aptly described as a centre forward with great physicality, good aerial prowess, and good technique'.

Before joining KCCA FC, Kankonde was a prized asset in the Vodacom Ligue 1, the top-tier league competition in the Democratic Republic of Congo that features continental giant TP Mazembe.

In his final season, he was the top scorer for AS Dauphin Noir de Goma. He netted five goals in 13 matches and scored three from direct free-kicks.

Other than that, according to KCCA FC, he won the golden boot at Union Sportive Tshinkunku de Kananga in 2018 and was also the best player and top scorer award at Academie Club de Kananga in 2017 and 2015, respectively.

Given Uganda Premier League's romance with Congolese forwards following the massive success of Cesar Lobi Manzoki and those who came before him, the signing of Kankonde came with a similar aura; thus, the name 'Congolese Magnifico' was used to describe the new signing.

The expectation came with high pressure from fans who anticipated goals from the forward.

However, the forward has managed only four goals in this debut season, and his fateful inaugural spell was sealed with an eight-match suspension following the melee after the KCCA – Vipers clash at the St. Mary's Stadium, Kitende.

To draw a comparison with Manzoki based on nationality would be unfair to the striker, who is only finding his feet at the club. A second chance next season?
