The Gor Mahia defender has explained why he is not worried by the threat of Brazilian giants Corinthians, who once stunned Chelsea in 2012 to clich the FIFA Club World Cup.

Gor Mahia vice Captain Geoffrey ‘Simiti’ Ochieng  has expressed eager anticipation to face Brazilian giants Corinthians FC at the Coal City International Cup, slated for August 2 in Enugu, Nigeria.

Both clubs will be making appearances as  guests, alongside Coton FC of Benin and home side Remo Stars, who will host Gor Mahia in their final group game on August 6.

The tournament offers the record Kenyan champions a chance to redeem themselves after a disappointing performance in the recently concluded CECAFA Kagame Cup, where they failed to win a single game.

Additionally, it provides a valuable platform to address weaknesses and test their preparedness for the 2024/25 CAF Champions League qualifiers.

Corinthians are one of the biggest clubs in South America, and in 2012, famously upset then-Champions League winners Chelsea to clinch the Club World Cup.

The club have also produced players that have gone on to do well for big European clubs, such as  Rivaldo, Paulinho, Adriano, and Alexandre Pato.

Now, Ochieng has revealed why playing them will benefit K’Ogalo.

"I can't wait to play against them. We only read about their long standing rivalry with Palmeiras in the press,” Ochieng told SportsBoom.

“We also read positive stories of the good players who pass through their youth systems. Playing against them will be a great honor.”

Although Corinthians being the pre-match favorites, Ochieng believes that Gor Mahia will not be intimidated by their profile and achievements. Ochieng’ who last received a call up to the Kenya national football team Harambee Stars in March, is confident that Gor Mahia can create a success story against the Brazilian side.

"We didn't do well in the Kagame Cup as we had only resumed for pre-season, but we have gathered momentum and had time to prepare. I believe we will do well," said Ochieng, formerly of Western Stima.

The match against Corinthians is not just a game but an opportunity for Gor Mahia players to showcase their talent and resilience on an international stage.

Ochieng and his teammates are determined to make a strong impression and gain valuable experience from competing against such a renowned club.

The Coal City International Cup promises to be a pivotal moment for Gor Mahia as they seek to regain their form and build confidence ahead of the new season.
