Chelsea have taken a cautious approach with defender Wesley Fofana and will now seek to play the defender once a week for a number of reasons.

Chelsea coach Enzo Maresca has agreed to follow the club's policy of only playing Wesley Fofana once a week until January.

This is in a bid to try and reduce his workload in order to avoid another a serious injury, according to L'Equipe.

The French defender, who was an unused substitute in France's 4-1 win over Israel on Sunday, didn't feature at all last term after suffering a season-ending anterior cruciate ligament damage in pre-season.

The highly-rated former Leicester City defender also missed a significant part of the 2022-23 season due to a knee problem. The 23-year-old has started in all seven of Chelsea's Premier League games, with the clash against West Ham the only match in which he didn't play 90 minutes.

However, the ball-playing defender has yet to feature in the Europa Conference League or the Carabao Cup so far this season. The defensive lynchpin will miss the Blues' trip to Anfield on October 20, due to suspension after accumulating five yellow cards in the Premier League.

The London club is facing a packed schedule, but Maresca has a large pool of players to choose from, affording the coach the luxucry of giving the player a rest when necessary. Fofana is tipped to become one of the best defenders in the world provided he remains injury-free and consistent.

Chelsea are currently in fourth place in the Premier League, four points behind leaders Liverpool.
