Why Benni McCarthy thinks taking Michael Olunga’s armband would be mistake

Benni McCarthy has explained the qualities about Michael Olunga that would be difficult to replace for Harambee Stars amid profligacy woes.

Harambee Stars head coach Benni McCarthy has come to the defense of Michael Olunga amid growing calls from frustrated fans to replace him as Kenya’s lead striker.

Olunga, who turned 31 on Wednesday, has been a crucial figure in the ongoing FIFA World Cup qualifiers, netting four goals in the campaign so far.

He was on target in both recent fixtures—scoring Kenya’s opener in the thrilling 3-3 draw against Gambia and adding a consolation goal in the 2-1 loss to Gabon, where Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s brace proved decisive.

However, despite his goal contributions, Olunga’s finishing has come under scrutiny, with missed chances that could have altered the outcome of both matches.

This adds to a growing list of games where he has squandered key opportunities, an issue that also persisted under former coach Engin Firat.

Speaking to the press last Sunday, McCarthy, a former striker himself, dismissed suggestions that Olunga should be dropped.

“I was a striker myself, and I used to miss a lot of chances. But when you score one goal, you're the hero, and people forget the five or six chances you missed,” he said.

While fans are eager for a new goal-scoring talisman, the options to replace Olunga remain limited.

Ryan Ogam leads the FKFPL goal charts with 15 goals but has struggled for form in recent months. Masoud Juma, on the other hand, has yet to prove he can lead the line consistently, with most of his recent appearances coming as a winger.

McCarthy also responded to calls for a transition to younger strikers, explaining why that option is easier to say than do.

“Yes, we need to bring in young players, and we are working on that. But this is only my second game in charge—I haven’t been here long. It’s a process; you can’t just come in and change everything overnight,” he said.

“He's our leader. He’s the guy I look to set the example for the rest of the team because he’s one of the best finishers I’ve seen in the game. If there are players who prove to be better than him, they will play. But right now, he’s the best we have, so he will be there.”

Despite the criticism, McCarthy sees positives in the team’s performance.

“I would be concerned if my striker wasn’t getting chances at all. But the fact that he is means the team is doing something well.

“It will come together. I’ve only had three training sessions with the team, and we’ve played two games. If a team can perform like that after just three training sessions, imagine what we can do with more time.

“People say we missed chances, but sometimes the goalkeeper makes great saves. If a goalkeeper pulls off a save, there’s nothing an outfield player can do about it.”

While McCarthy is open to grooming Olunga’s long-term successor, for now, Kenya’s captain remains the focal point of Harambee Stars’ attack.
