FOOTBALL How Kenya's intersex activist Chris Katch overcame stigma to win the FIFPRO Player Merit Award
Kenya Police Bullets striker Chris Kach Mulusa wins global award for advocating intersex rights, breaking barriers both on and off the soccer field.
Now, she has vowed to reject future invitations, citing personal and systemic challenges tied to her identity as an intersex athlete.
“To be true to myself right now, even if I get a call-up, I’ll turn it down,” Kach explained in a candid interview via TV 47.
“I have to be truthful there. That one even my mom knows, because whatever I was going through, my family went through the most.”
Kach’s decision stems from the controversies and hurdles she faced during her U-20 call-ups, including exhaustive medical tests she found emotionally and physically draining.
The former Kenya Police Bullets player opened up about the unique struggles faced by intersex athletes in Kenyan football.
“Because in Kenya so far, we have sidelined intersex persons. Internationally, there are intersex persons who are playing. In Europe, Africans are going there to play. But in Kenya, it’s different. So for me, if I get a call-up, sorry to say, I won’t honor it,” she stated.
The challenges began during her U-20 selection, a period Kach describes as both a high point in her performance and a deeply frustrating experience.
“At that time, I can say Kach was Kach in terms of performance. Everything was high, including my expectations,” she recalled.
Rather than stepping back from football entirely, Kach has shifted her focus toward advocacy. She is determined to use her platform to challenge the exclusion of intersex athletes and push for their inclusion in Kenyan football.
“So in that angle right now, I think it’s my role to champion for them and maybe to question the federation on reasons as to why the upcoming players, who are good, are not getting the chance,” she emphasized.
