Arsenal legend Paul Merson has slammed Manchester United's recruitment plan, calling for former defenders Gary Neville and Rio Ferdinand to be in charge.

Manchester United have had a poor start to the season, placing 14th on the log in the English Premier League with eight points having won two, drawn as many and lost three matches.

Embattled United boss, Erik ten Hag has faced numerous criticism, most recently from Premier League legend Paul Merson.

The former Arsenal man has slammed the Red Devils' boss recruitment policy, questioning some of his big-money signings.

"You know Man United have to start walking before they start running and they definitely can't start sprinting yet and this is what everybody thinks," expressed Merson via Sky Sports

"I think at the moment the one thing that would worry more than anything is off the top my head, who's come into club that they've bought and you've gone, 'he was an amazing success'."

"I mean Anthony was 80 odd million pounds. That just sums it all up. I'm looking at the players they've bought, they bought the boy Hojlund. I like Hojlund but he is a young kid. You can't put a young kid Man United upfront and ask him to get 20 goals a season," he added

Merson has backed former Manchester United legends Gary Neville and Rio Ferdinand to remedy the Red Devil's transfer woes.

"I just don't know what they've done. I would have put someone like Garry Neville in charge of the recruitment. Garry has been at that club all his career. He knows football inside and out. You put someone like him in charge or Rio Ferdinand or even together," said Merson.

The former Manchester United duo have similarly been critical of Ten Hag's lack of plan, leaving doubt on whether they'd take up the job if it was on offfer.
