The Harambee Stars captain was delighted to get on the scoresheet as his side won their final build-up match before heading to Austria

Harambee Stars captain Michael Olunga was delighted to get on the scoresheet as his side Al-Duhail claimed a 3-2 win over Lusail City FC in a friendly match on Thursday night.

With coach Hernan Crespo utilising every member of his squad, Olunga played 45 minutes and opened the scoring during the encounter at the Al-Duhail Sports Centre with teammate Abdulaziz Muhammad adding the second before Lusail scored an own goal.

Crespo is getting his charges up to speed as they prepare for the new season where they hope to defend their title and the match seems to have given Olunga the boost that he needed.

“45min under the belt. One goal. Keep working. What’s ahead is better,” Olunga posted on Facebook on Friday morning.

Thursday’s match was Al-Duhail’s final build up before they head to Austria for further pre-season training on Friday.

Olunga had an impressive campaign with Al-Duhail last season, winning back-to-back Golden Boot awards, after bagging 22 goals while claiming his first Qatar Stars League title.

The striker was also the top scorer in the Ooredoo Cup with 10 goals with Al-Duhail lifting the trophy as well as the Qatar Cup, ending the season with 40 goals from 38 games in all competition.

Al-Duhail, who also reached the Asian Champions League semi-final, recently extended the contract of their Argentine coach Hernan Crespo for another year after the former Inter Milan and Chelsea forward led them to the treble in 2022-23.

Olunga had been the subject of transfer interest from teams in Europe with Dutch side FC Utrecht, Turkish giants Galatasaray and Premier League outfit Everton rumoured to be among those interested but he seems now focused on an extended stay in Qatar.
