FKFPL What does Gor Mahia need to pip Tusker to the title?

K’Ogalo were handed a huge boost following the brewers’ draw with Nairobi City Stars and the arithmetic is now in their favour with four games remaining

Gor Mahia received a huge boost in their quest to reclaim the Football Kenya Federation Premier League title when closest challengers Tusker FC were forced to a goalless draw by Nairobi City Stars on Wednesday.

The result, coupled with K’Ogalo’s 2-1 win over Mathare United, has given Johnathan McKinstry’s men some breathing space, as they opened up a four-point lead over Tusker with six games remaining.

Gor are now on 62 points with Tusker on 58 and it leaves them with an advantage as they seek to win a record-extending 20th crown.

The run-in seems to favour Gor, at least on paper, as their next two games are against struggling Wazito FC and AFC Leopards while Tusker have resurgent Kakamega Homeboyz and Kariobangi Sharks, who like to blow hot and cold.

Wazito seem destined for the National Super League as they are second from bottom on the table and with Gor thrashing them 4-0 in February, few will bet against another K’Ogalo win. Then there is the small matter of the Mashemeji Derby against bitter rivals AFC Leopards whose current form should give Gor plenty to be happy about.

Form has rarely counted in the derby but even the most optimistic of Leopards fans know it will be a tall order against the league leaders given Ingwe have not won any of their last seven league games, collecting just four points from a possible 21 after four draws and three defeats.

Gor will also be encouraged by sentiments made by Leopards coach Patrick Aussems that he will field a weakened squad for the clash as his focus is on winning the FKF Cup semi-final against Kakamega Homebozy which will come after the derby.

“I changed 90 percent of the team because the priority and the target was not the game of today. The target is to get 19 players ready for our most important game of the season, the semi-final,” Aussems said after Wednesday’s league loss to Ulinzi Stars.

“I used this game to check some things. I will use the same (team) for the Nzoia Sugar game and even against Gor Mahia, we will try something to be ready for the semi-final.”

For Tusker, the task does not get easy as it is Homeboyz next, a side that has won five and drawn one of their last six games and, on the Brewers, current form, a win for the Kakamega-based side or draw cannot be ruled out.

Robert Matano’s men will then tackle Kariobangi Sharks, a side that cannot stop conceding but also scoring freely. While Tusker can be happy with the porous backline, they should be wary of the Sharks attack that has scored 43 goals, six more than them.

Assuming both sides get out of their next two games unscathed, then their meeting at the end of May will decide the destiny of the title. Tusker will host Gor needing to win to reduce the gap to one point with three matches remaining.

If that happens, then Gor will have to beat Ulinzi, Homeboyz and City Stars to wrap up the title on the final day but a win for K’Ogalo will extend their lead to seven points, leaving them needing just one win from the three games to be crowned.

A draw in the tie will leave the Green Army with their four-point lead, therefore a win and draw from their final three fixtures will be required to claim the title.
