The federation accused the supporters of invading the pitch and making it impossible to award the players at the champions’ podium, forcing them to receive the trophy in the stands
Football Kenya Federation has blamed Gor Mahis supporters for creating mayhem that led to the players receiving their medals and trophy in the stands after winning their league title on Sunday.
Gor fans invaded the pitch at the final whistle in celebration after their team had come from behind to beat Nairobi City Stars 4-1 and lift a record-extending 20th league title at Kasarani Stadium.
The scene created confusion with the players whisked away to the dressing room only to emerge in the stands for the medal ceremony.
FKF had set up a champions podium on the pitch to hand over the trophy medals but with fans unbale to leave the pitch, it became impossible to use it.
The federation had made similar arrangements in Mumias where Tusker FC were taking on Vihiga Bullets hoping for slip up from Gor to claim a third straight league crown.
“At the Kasarani stadium, all the necessary elements, including the champions podium, arc, red carpet, champions pause banner, models, and confetti, had been set up, ready for the coronation ceremony to commence,” FKF said via a statement on Monday.
“However, a large number of enthusiastic fans overwhelmed the security measures in place and invaded the pitch. Efforts to remove the fans from the field proved challenging due to their sheer numbers and determination to be a part of the celebration.
“Under these circumstances, a decision was made to ensure the safety of everyone involved and to proceed with the awarding of medals and the trophy to Gor Mahia at the VIP area. It is worth noting that similar arrangements had also been made at the Mumias Complex, where Tusker was playing against Vihiga.
“These preparations were not limited to Gor Mahia alone but were intended to acknowledge and honour the league winner in a fitting manner. While the fan invasion disrupted the original plan for the coronation ceremony, the decision to adapt and award the team in a controlled environment was made in the best interest of all parties involved.”
As it turned out, Gor fans ended up using the champions podium for their own celebration, climbing on it while taking photos and there was also a ‘fans’ trophy’ on show.
