“We are treating it as a normal match, just like we have the other matches of the season, which is why we are on top.”

Gor Mahia’s hotshot Kenyan striker Benson Omala is looking forward to the challenge of facing AFC Leopards in the Mashemeji derby, but insists his side are treating it as “a normal game”

Omala, who currently leads the goalscoring charts on 25 for the season, stands a very realistic chance of breaking Maurice Ochieng’ Sonyi’s record of 26 goals in a single top flight season.

“It is a big game in the history of Kenyan football and the Mashemeji derby,” he said,” as players, we are treating it as a normal game, just like we have been all season,” he added.

“We are treating it as a normal match, just like we have the other matches of the season, which is why we are on top.”

Quizzed about the challenge of retaining the title for the first time since 2020, Omala says his side have to be “absolutely perfect” if they are to win it this time round, given Robert Matano’s charges Tusker have been giving them stiff competition.

“ We have been up there with Tusker. The competition is so stiff to the extent a single mistake could be costly right now. We are just two points ahead of them. We have to be absolutely perfect if we are to stand a chance of clinching this title again.”

In the first leg against AFC Leopards, both sides were unable to get the better of each other, drawing 0-0 at the Nyayo National Stadium in January.

K’ogalo however, will look to make amends, with Omala fancying his chances of testing AFC Keeper Levis Opiyo’s net, while equalling Ochieng’s record in the process.

A win for Sirkal will also put them on 66 points after 30 matches played.
