The brewers found the going tough in Muhoroni with Collins Neto scoring twice for Wazito who increased their chances of sealing a relegation playoff slot

Tusker FC handed Gor Mahia the advantage in the Football Kenya Federation Premier League title race following a 2-1 defeat away to Wazito FC in Muhoroni on Sunday.

Muhoroni has become a tough hunting ground for visiting teams this season and proved to be the case yet again as Collins Neto scored a brace for the home side, the first arriving after 14 minutes, to announce their intentions of collecting all three points.

Wazito then held on and kept at bay Tusker’s attack to claim a 1-0 lead at halftime. Tusker resumed the second half like a team possessed with Shaphan Siwa coming close in the 55th minute. Siwa found space on the right, took a dinking effort at goal but it brushed the upright.

That was after Charles Momanyi had come close to equalising when he rose well to glance a header that hit the post with David Odoyo unable to capitalise on the rebound when he fired over.

Tusker kept prodding and got their reward 10 minutes from time when Momanyi headed in the equaliser. Levin Odhiambo floated in a lovely ball from a corner and the former Gor Mahia defender towered over everyone to head home and level matters.

However, any hopes of a Tusker comeback were extinguished seven minutes later when Neto sealed all the points for Wazito from the penalty spot. A handball in the Tusker box saw Neto given the opportunity to win it for the home side and he did the honours, sending goalkeeper Brian Bwire the wrong way to slot home.

Defeat ends Tusker’s seven-match unbeaten run in all competitions, but most importantly, hands the title initiative to Gor Mahia with two matches remaining. Gor, who beat Ulinzi Stars 2-0 on Sunday, now occupy top spot on 67 points, two ahead of the brewers, who came into Sunday’s match enjoying a one-point lead.

Wazito, meanwhile, are close to securing a promotion playoff spot as they sit 16th on the 18-team table on 26 points, four ahead of Mathare United, who lost 1-0 to Kakamega Homeboyz.

Gor Mahia now need to win their remaining two games against Homeboyz and Nairobi City Stars to claim a record-extending 20th league title, and a first since 2020, while Tusker, who face Posta Rangers and relegated Vihiga Bullets, will be hoping to capitalise on any slip ups.
