Walter Bou's stunning goal settles Argentine league game
The year 2024 has been blessed with stunning goals from around the globe, but Bou’s goal in the Argentine first division might be the best of them all.
Lanus secured a dramatic 3-2 comeback victory over Tigre on Sunday evening, propelling them to ninth place in the standings. The match was decided by a moment of brilliance from Walter Bou in the 90th minute.
The 30-year-old centre-forward controlled a cross with his chest, setting himself up for an audacious overhead kick from outside the box. The ball soared perfectly over the goalkeeper, landing in the back of the net. Bou's extraordinary goal is a strong contender for the Puskas Award, thanks to its remarkable execution and timing.
Previous Puskas winners
The FIFA Puskas Award was established on October 20, 2009, to honour the player judged to have scored the most aesthetically pleasing, or most beautiful, goal of the calendar year.
The award is named after Ferenc Puskas, the legendary Real Madrid and Hungary striker, who is widely considered one of the most prolific forwards in the history of European football.
Puskas scored an astonishing 806 goals in 793 games and held a world record for his 86 national team goals in 90 appearances, which was eventually broken by another Real Madrid great Cristiano Ronaldo.
The first edition of the Puskas Award was ironically won by Cristiano Ronaldo for his goal against Porto in the Champions League semifinal.
Since then, 14 different players have received the honor, including Olivier Giroud, Mohamed Salah, Son Heung-Min, Neymar, and Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
Interestingly, Lionel Messi has been nominated the most times without winning, having failed to secure the award in seven attempts.
