Souhampton defeated Chelsea 1-0 at Stamford Bridge thanks to a trademark James Ward-Prowse freekick.
Southampton captain James Ward-Prowse scored the only goal of a tense encounter at Stamford Bridge with a trademark brilliant free-kick just before half-time to pile even more pressure on under-fire Chelsea boss Graham Potter.
How it happened
Southampton dominated the early possession, and Kamaldeen Sulemana tested Kepa Arrizabalaga, before new signing Paul Onuachu saw a fine header loop just wide of the post.
Chelsea failed to get a foothold in the game, despite the efforts of January signing Noni Madueke, who shot into the side netting.
The visitors reaped the rewards for their brave performance on the stroke of half time. The excellent James Ward-Prowse whipped a 25-yard free-kick beyond Kepa.
The goal took the Southampton captain to within one of David Beckham’s Premier League record of 18 free-kick goals.
Chelsea boss Graham Potter introduced Raheem Sterling to start the second half and the Blues' attack immediately looked sharper as they pushed the Saints' defence deeper.
Sterling had two good attempts blocked and Chelsea continued to probe in search of an equaliser.
A serious head injury to Cesar Azpilicueta led to 12 minutes of injury time, which afforded the Blues a chance to find an equaliser, but Southampton defended fearlessly and saw out a famous victory.
Player of the match - James Ward-Prowse
The Southampton captain led his team in exemplary fashion and scored a stunning freekick to condemn Chelsea to defeat in front of their home support. Top performance.
