CAF Champions League Vipers' Player Ratings Following a 2-0 Defeat to Jwaneng Galaxy

Allan Damba • 16:22 - 20.08.2023

Uganda Premier League champions, Vipers SC, endured a painful 2-0 defeat against Botswana's Jwaneng Galaxy in the CAF Champions League preliminary round.

The performance from the Venoms fell short of expectations on Sunday at the Lobatse Sports Complex.

Pulse Sports evaluated each player based on their performance on hostile territory.

Alfred Mudekereza (GK) - 05

Mudekereza could have performed better for Thabang Sesinyi's goal. He made a commendable save from a freekick in the first half and executed an excellent double save in the 63rd minute.

Ashraf Mandela - 04

Mandela's defensive performance wasn't impressive, and he also failed to contribute to the team's offensive efforts, which needed more support up front.

Isa Mubiru - 04

A regular left-back starter for Vipers, Mubiru prioritises defence over attack. This pattern continued in Botswana, and he struggled to make an impact in the opposing half.

Hillary Mukundane - 04

Hillary Mukundane struggled against Jwaneng Galaxy

Mukundane struggled to contain Thabang Vincent Sesinyi, resulting in his led-defence conceding an early and a late goal. It wasn't his best game.

Livingstone Mulondo - 04

Mulondo had a forgettable outing, lacking a significant presence on the field. His partnership with Mukundane could have been more effective in dealing with the threat posed by Sesinyi.

Patrick Mbowa - 05

Playing slightly higher than both Mulondo and Mukundane, Mbowa displayed reasonable ball control. However, his influence on the game, particularly in leading attacks from deep, was limited.

Siraje Ssentamu - 05

Vipers' Siraje Ssentamu didnt have an easy game against Galaxy on Sunday

Ssentamu exhibited his usual strong presence in midfield, disrupting the opposition's play. However, his forward passing was occasionally suspect. He was substituted after 65 minutes.

Bright Anukani - 06

Anukani had a tidy but subdued first half as the team's playmaker. He orchestrated a promising second-half attack that should have resulted in a goal, but Yunus Sentamu's shot went wide. Anukani also had a well-saved long-range attempt.

Milton Karisa - 05

Karisa created Vipers' first genuine scoring opportunity, but Yunus Sentamu's shot lacked the power to trouble the goalkeeper. Karisa's work rate was commendable, and his movement off the ball was effective.

Yunus Sentamu - 04

Sentamu squandered two good chances in the first and second halves. One attempt was weak, and the other narrowly missed the target. Given his abilities, he should have converted at least one of those opportunities.

Rodriguez Giancarlo - 04

Giancarlo seemed isolated at times upfront and struggled to trouble the opposition defence. His powerful freekick in the first half narrowly missed the target. He was substituted after the hour mark.

Substitutions:

Mohammed Salem - 04

Salem was brought on when the team desperately needed a goal. He couldn't connect well for a rebound after Anukani's shot was saved in the 69th minute.

Abubakar Lawal - 05

Lawal replaced Giancarlo and displayed tireless effort, but he didn't significantly influence the game.

Abdul Lumala - 05

Lumala brought energy to the team but couldn't inspire a squad that appeared demoralized.

Karim Watambala - 05

Watambala contributed a couple of forward passes and displayed positive energy, but he didn't leave a significant impact.

Awisone Fumador - N/A

He made a late cameo appearance.

Leonard Martins Neiva (Head Coach) - 04

The Brazilian coach has yet to mould the talented players into a cohesive team. The defensive setup he employed still conceded two goals. There is substantial work before the match at St. Mary's Stadium, Kitende, next Saturday.
