Ex-Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany has led Burnley back to the Premier League with seven games to spare in his first season as manager of the club after establishing a 19-point lead over Luton Town in third position, who have played a game more.
Burnley gain promotion after Middlesbrough win
Burnley are odds on to win the English championship division after a brilliant season that has seen them entertain their way to the top of the second flight with a healthy 11-point gap between them and Sheffield United in second place.
Burnley confirmed promotion to the Premier League for the 2023/24 season with a hard-fought away win over Middlesbrough in a game where Super Eagles hopeful Chuba Akpom's goal was not enough for the hosts.
Burnley won the game thanks to defender Conor Roberts' fourth league goal this season as his well-placed shot beat Zack Steffen in goal for Middlesbrough.
Conors' goal came after Akpom had equalised from the spot for the hosts after Ashley Barnes opened the scoring after only 12 minutes of play in the first half.
Burnley headed for record-breaking season
The victory was Burnley's 25th in the Championship as they continue their inevitable march towards 100+ points in the 2022/23 season.
The Clarets have gained 87 points in 39 matches and are just three points away from last season's champions Fulham's total points haul for the full campaign while being 19 points away from Reading's record haul of 106 points achieved in the 2005/06 season.
Burnley have only lost twice in the Championship this season, at least six fewer times than the next-best team in the competition Luton who have lost eight times.
Their place at the top of the league and the potential for a historic season is a result of a season-long dominance by the Clarets that has drawn praise for the club and its Belgian coach Kompany who has been touted for great things in the future.
Current Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola, who coached Kompany in the twilight of his playing career has already alluded to the fact the Belgian ex-defender would one day coach the Cityzens and will be a success at club as a coach just as he had been as a player.
