Harambee Stars forward Johan Ayunga is warming up for Kenya’s 2025 AFCON qualifiers in fine fashion after scoring his first goal of the season for Scottish Premiership side St Mirren.

Harambee Stars striker Jonah Ayunga seems to be finding his mojo just at the right time ahead of Kenya’s decisive 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Ayunga opened his goal account for the season when he scored for St Mirren in their 3-1 comeback victory against St Johnstone in a Scottish Premiership match on Wednesday.

Benjamin Kimpioka gave St Johnstone an early lead before Scott Tanser levelled for St Mirren in the 30th minute and Mark O'Hara would put them 2-1 ahead in the second half before Ayunga added further gloss on the score line with a late third.

Ayunga, who was introduced with five minutes remaining, latched onto a ball from Mikael Mandron, controlling it well before racing towards goal to fire home in time added on, to secure all three points for Stephen Robinson’s men.

It was a morale-boosting goal for Ayunga, who has had a difficult last two months at the club, as this was his first appearance in six games, having been overlooked in the previous five outings for St Mirren.

The striker had been among the starters early in the season but saw his opportunities limited in September. He had not tasted action since managing 70 minutes in a 2-2 draw against Kilmarnock on September 14 before the five minutes he was afforded on Wednesday.

Having scored his first goal of the season, Ayunga will hope that it convinces Robinson to hand him an extended stay in the team, which will also be a positive for Harambee Stars.

Ayunga started his first match for Harambee Stars in their 2-1 victory away to Namibia in September but was on the bench when Kenya were thrashed 4-0 by Cameroon before he was afforded six minutes in the return leg tie against the Indomitable Lions.

His return to form will be crucial for coach Engin Firat as he looks to find a winning strategy against Zimbabwe away on November 15 and at home to Namibia four days later, given Kenya must win both matches and hope that the Warriors do not collect maximum points in Cameroon to seal their AFCON ticket.
