Victor Wanyama could not get to 101 MLS starts for CF Montreal as he had to contend with a bench role when CF Montreal blew away a two-goal lead against New York Red Bulls.

Victor Wanyama came in as a late substitute for CF Montreal in his team’s 2-2 draw at home to New York Red Bulls on Thursday morning.

Wanyama, who made his landmark 100th MLS start during last weekend’s goalless draw with Real Salt Lake, did not get a second straight spot in the starting XI and had to come in in the final 18 minutes to replace youngster Nathan Saliba.

His arrival came when Montreal were leading 2-1 courtesy of first half goals from Sinusi Ibrahim and Kwandwo Opoku.

With Montreal leading 2-1 in the 80th minute, Matias Coccaro nearly drew a penalty that could have put the game out of reach after goalkeeper Jonathan Sirois found him with a long ball over the defence.

Coccaro drove into the box before Noah Elie knocked him down but the officials didn’t whistle for a foul, provoking loud jeers from the home fans.

The non-call came back to haunt Montreal as New York knocked home the equaliser eight minutes later.

Wanyama was brought in to shore things in midfield but was not able to complete the job as Montreal threw away their lead for a share of the spoils.

It was Wanyama’s ninth game for Montreal this season, but a seventh substitute appearance, having managed just two starts.

Montreal have failed to win any of their last three games, drawing all of them, to stay in 12th position on the MLS Eastern Conference table and will need to improve quickly to stay in contention for a playoff spot after missing out last season.

Laurent Courtois’ men visit Colorado Rapids in their next match on Saturday.
