Victor Wanyama left fans guessing where he could be playing next year following a visit to one of his former sides on Tuesday.

Former Harambee Stars captain Victor Wanyama sparked speculation over a possible sensational return to Scotland when he paid a visit to his former club Celtic on Tuesday.

Wanyama was in the stands at Celtic Park as Celtic faced Bundesliga side RB Leipzig in the Champions League and took the opportunity to renew some acquaintances while rolling back the years.

“This is one of the best stadiums I have ever played in. Once you step out there and you see all the support, the fans, it is something you can’t explain so the feeling once you are there you want to give everything,” said Wanyama.

“To players it means a lot when you see the fans out there, giving their all, supporting their club so you want to give your all and it is always nice to see support like this.”

Wanyama was also reminded of his goal against Barcelona in 2012 when Celtic secured a memorable 2-1 win against arguably the best team in the world at the time.

“It was a tough game and we had a good group, we went out there and when you have a big game like this and how the fans support their team from the first minute to the end it gives you the energy and you get the result,” he added.

Wanyama is soon-to-be a free agent as his contract at MLS club CF Montreal comes to an end in December and given his peripheral role in the last one-and-a-half seasons, it appears he has already played his final match for the club.

Wanyama is currently exploring his options and a return to Europe cannot be ruled out with Scotland, where he had a great time with Celtic, among those on the list.

Wanyama played at Celtic for two years, between 2011 and 2013, making 91 appearances while scoring 13, with his performances turning him into a cult hero at the club before he left to join English Premier League club Southampton.

He moved to Tottenham in 2016, playing four seasons after which, he switched to Montreal in March 2020.

Wanyama was heavily linked with a return to Celtic in 2022 when he was coming to the end of his contract at Montreal but the Canadian club extended his deal by a further two years.

Now, with the club promising to make wholesome changes given 11 players will be out of contract next month, Wanyama appears to be those on the chopping board, leading to speculations on where he could be playing next.

His visit to Celtic Park will therefore heighten speculation over his future and with the January transfer window likely to be a period of interest as he will be free from his current deal and ready to begin a new chapter.
