The former Harambee Stars captain has shared the reasons for his decision to quit international football in 2021 when some felt he still had a lot to give.

Former Harambee Stars captain Victor Wanyama says his decision to retire from international football was to give a chance to younger players in the national team.

Wanyama retired from international football in September 21, having earned 64 caps since his debut in May 2007, although there was later talk of a return to the national team.

He captained Kenya to their last Africa Cup of Nations in 2019 with Harambee Stars failing to qualify for the next three tournaments in 2021, 2023 and 2025.

There have been some sentiments that his retirement is one of the reasons Kenya failed to qualify for AFCON but he has dismissed that, saying those present are good enough to seal a ticket.

"It would be unfair to claim that my retirement hurt Kenya’s chances of qualification," Wanyama told Flashscore.

"Saying that would discredit the hard work and dedication of the other players. I cannot play for Kenya forever, and my decision was intentional—to pave the way for younger players to grow and take responsibility, just as I once did.

"Sure, qualifying for AFCON would have been a proud moment, but stepping aside was about the future of Kenyan football, not clinging to the present.”

Wanyama has full confidence in current skipper Michael Olunga whom he terms a good leader that makes the team better.

"Speaking of Olunga, he is not only a good person but also an exceptional captain. I genuinely believe he has been doing an excellent job managing and guiding the team effectively,” added Wanyama.

Wanyama is currently searching for a new club after his near five-year stay with MLS side CF Montreal came to an end in December.

The former Celtic, Southampton and Tottenham Hotspur midfielder has remained guarded over his next destination although he has previously spoken of his willingness to return to Europe or even play in the Gulf.
