Nigeria's Victor Boniface has been named the Bundesliga Rookie of the Season after an impressive debut at Bayer Leverkusen.

Nigeria striker Victor Boniface has been named the Bundesliga's Rookie of the Season after an outstanding first campaign with Bayer Leverkusen.

The 23-year-old announced himself on the German top-flight scene in sensational style, winning four consecutive Rookie of the Month awards between August and November.

His blistering start was rewarded with the prestigious end-of-season accolade, as confirmed by the Bundesliga's announcement:

"And the winner is... VICTOR BONIFACE. Bayer Leverkusen striker Boniface takes home the Rookie of the Season award after making an instant impact."

Boniface joined Leverkusen from Belgian club Union Saint-Gilloise last summer and hit 13 league goals despite missing three months with injury, also netting five times in the Europa League.

His excellent debut season was integral as Leverkusen won the Bundesliga title for the first time in their history.

Reacting to his Rookie of the Season award, the Nigerian celebrated his achievement by commenting:

"9ja (Nigeria) no dey carry last. Thanks you guys" on Leverkusen's post which read: "Rookie of the Season. Victor Boniface. What a year."

The Super Eagles striker will get his first taste of Champions League football next term after firing Leverkusen into Europe's elite club competition.

This latest award caps an incredible year for Boniface, who has gone from relative obscurity to becoming one of the Bundesliga's breakout stars and Nigeria's new striking sensation.
