ATHLETICS Venue for 2024 World Cross-Country Championship changed

The new host city will be unveiled before the end of September, but there remains a keen interest in collaborating with Croatia on future sporting events.

World Athletics has announced a change of venue for the 2024 World Cross-Country Championships.

Originally slated to take place in Medulin and Pula, Croatia, on February 10, the association has deemed that the preparations in these cities have not progressed sufficiently to host the event as planned.

This development has spurred race organizers to fasten negotiations with an alternative host in Europe, with the aim of rescheduling the championship to March 2024.

The World Athletics Cross Country Championships, a prestigious event on the global sports calendar, comprises a range of categories, including junior and senior divisions for both men and women, along with mixed relay events.

Uganda's very own Jacob Kiplimo is the fastest cross country runner, after winningat this year’s edition he in Bathurst, Australia.

Kiplimo's compatriot Joshua Cheptegei – who had won gold in 2019 - secured a silver medal, as Uganda also picked up two senior team bronze medals.

In terms of overall medals, Kenya claimed the top spot at the previous championship, amassing an impressive 10 medals, including six gold.

Ethiopia followed closely behind, also with 10 medals but two gold. Uganda, with its four medals, secured a respectable third place in the medal standings.

After the 2024 event, the World Cross-Country Championship will head across the Atlantic to Tallahassee, USA, in 2026.

This will be a milestone 46th edition of the championship since its inception in 1973, which took place in Waregem, Belgium.
