Liverpool finally offer star player new contract after much speculation
Despite rumours of a departure, the Reds are reportedly taking steps to agree on fresh terms with one key player.
Van Dijk's contract situation
The Netherlands international is one of the three Liverpool superstars whose contracts expire at the season's end. Van Dijk, Trent Alexander Arnold, and Mohamed Salah will all be available to leave for free next month.
However, the trio has expressed interest in continuing with the Reds, with Van Dijk inspiring the most confidence among the three.
The 33-year-old joined Liverpool from Southampton in the winter transfer window of 2018 and has gone on to make history with the club, with one Champions League and one Premier League title.
What Van Dijk said
In his latest media appearance, Van Dijk was asked to provide an update on his contract situation, and he had the following to say, "There is no deadline at all. We will see what the future brings. Is there an update? No."
He was then asked about Salah's situation. He said,”The numbers speak for themselves. He’s a very special athlete.”
“He’s done amazingly for the club and hopefully, he can play his best season ever for the club, stay important with his goals and assists and be clinical.
“He is a professional. We’ve been there, he’s been there, so onto the next (game). And next season? I don’t know."
