Van Der Sar was booed by Ajax fans after the club failed to win a trophy this season.

Former Manchester United and Netherlands goalkeeper Edwin Van Der Sar has announced his resignation as the Chief Executive Officer of Ajax.

Van Der Sar’s move follows a series of criticisms, including boos from the team’s fans on Sunday after the Dutch giants failed to win a trophy and missed out on UEFA Champions League qualification for the first time in 15 years.

The club’s board has accepted his decision but requested their former star to stay on the job until August 1st.

"After almost eleven years on the board, I am done,” Van Der Sar told Ajax.

“We have experienced wonderful things together, but it has also been an incredibly tough period.

“I feel the need to take some distance, to get some rest, and to do other things. It doesn’t feel good to decide about this wonderful club's future in the coming period. That is why I have decided to resign,” he explained the reason for his move.

The former goalkeeper has been linked to a move to Manchester United, with the Saudis stepping up their quest to take over the club.

Van Der Sar has previously worked with current United manager Erik Ten Haag at Ajax.
