Two saves from Chelsea’s Ann Katrin Berger helped the blues dethrone reigning champions Lyon in a dramatic quarterfinal tie
Chelsea and Lyon battled into penalties to find a winner in their UEFA Women’s Champions League Round of 16 encounter as a 1-0 Lyon win on the night cancelled out Chelsea’s first-leg advantage.
How it happened
In the only UWCL fixture to go to extra time and then penalties, eventually came up tops following an enthralling 120 minute and penalty shootout at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea had taken a 1-0 win from the first leg thanks to a goal from Guro Reiten, but failed to inspire a similar result in the second leg at home despite offering up an incredible battle against Lyon for a place in the Semifinals.
Lyon equalised on aggregate in the second half of normal time after Canadian forward Vanessa Gilles found space at the far post to give the French side parity in the game.
When the game headed into extra time, the experience of the Lyon side showed as they found a way past Chelsea at the start of the second half of extra time.
German midfielder Sara Dabritz scored the all-important winning goal, settling the tie in Lyon’s favour with a brilliant strike from inside the penalty area.
Chelsea, however refused to give up on the tie, and a 128th-minute penalty from Maren Mjelde dragged the tie into penalties.
In the ensuing shootout, Chelsea’s Ann Katrin Berger saved from Lyon captain Wendie Renard and forward Lindsey Horan to send the Blues to their first semifinal since losing the Final in 2021 to Barcelona.
The win over Lyob set up a repeat of the 2021 final between Barcelona and Chelsea in this year's semifinal with the UWCL promising two more enthralling European nights.
