Maurizio Pochettino lands new job as USMNT head coach

Mauricio Pochettino has been appointed as the new head coach of the U.S. men’s national team (USMNT).

The announcement, made on September 10, 2024, marks the end of a prolonged search for a new leader following Gregg Berhalter's departure earlier this year.

The 52-year-old Argentine replaces Berhalter, who was dismissed after a disappointing Copa América performance.

Pochettino's contract details were not disclosed, but he is expected to be one of the highest-paid coaches in the sport, with financial support coming from billionaire Kenneth C. Griffin and additional commercial partners.

Pochettino's coaching career includes notable tenures with Southampton, Tottenham Hotspur, Paris Saint-Germain, and Chelsea.

His stint at Chelsea, while ultimately short-lived, saw him guiding the team to a sixth-place finish in the Premier League and concluding the season with a strong finish.

His most distinguished achievement came in 2019 when he led Tottenham to its first UEFA Champions League final.

Pochettino's appointment is seen as a strategic move by U.S. Soccer to capitalize on his experience and reputation.

With the 2026 World Cup just under two years away, the USMNT is looking to leverage his expertise to enhance their competitive edge.

Pochettino's first official match as coach will be against Panama on October 12, 2024, in Austin, followed by a friendly against Mexico.

The USMNT, currently struggling with a winless streak and a lack of cohesion, is hopeful that Pochettino's leadership will bring a much-needed change in culture and performance.

U.S. Soccer’s Sporting Director Matt Crocker, who previously worked with Pochettino at Southampton, played a crucial role in the negotiations.

Crocker’s successful pitch to Pochettino was instrumental in securing his services for the national team.
