Ugandan defender Kassaga Juuko Richard joins an Iraqi top-flight club after impressive spells in Tunisia and Libya.

Ugandan international defender Kassaga Juuko Richard has completed a transfer to Iraq Stars League side Al-Karma SC from Libyan Premier League outfit Al-Ahly Benghazi.

The experienced center-back makes the move after a solid stint in Libya, where he established himself as a defensive pillar for Al-Ahly Benghazi.

Juuko, a former Kira Young, KCCA FC, and URA FC player, initially made headlines when he joined Tunisian club Olympique de Beja, a team he helped to lift the Tunisian Cup.

His impressive performances earned him a switch to Al-Ahly Benghazi in August 2023 on a two-year contract.

Al-Karma SC, based in Al-Karmah, Al-Anbar, saw Juuko as the perfect reinforcement to strengthen their backline as they seek to improve their standing in the league.

Currently competing in the Iraq Stars League, Al-Karma sits in 13th place in the 20-team competition, with 24 points from 19 matches.

The club, which was founded in 2020, has been on a rapid rise in Iraqi football, having won the Iraqi First Division League and finishing as runners-up in the Iraqi Premier Division League before securing their place in the top flight.

Juuko’s arrival at Al-Karma is expected to bring much-needed experience and defensive solidity to a team eager to secure a stronger finish in the league.

Speaking about his move, Juuko expressed his excitement at joining a new league and embracing the challenge ahead.

“I am happy to be here and looking forward to giving my best for Al-Karma SC. It is a new chapter in my career, and I am ready to contribute to the team’s success,” he said.

Ugandan football enthusiasts will be keen to follow Juuko’s progress in Iraq, as he continues to fly the nation’s flag high on the international stage.

His move also highlights the growing reputation of Ugandan defenders in international leagues, with several players securing contracts across Africa, Asia, and the Middle East in recent years.
