Despite Ademola Lookman's best effort, Real Madrid start the 2024/25 season with a trophy as they beat Atalanta to win the Super Cup.

After an underwhelming first-half, Real Madrid revved up their engines and put on a clinic, as they scored twice in the second 45 to beat Atalanta 2-0 and win the UEFA Super Cup.

Carlo Ancelotti named his gala 11 for the match held at the Warsaw National Stadium, and his galacticos stepped up to the occasion. Vinicius Jr assisted Federico Valverde for Real Madrid's first, and Jude Bellingham set up new boy Kylian Mbappe for the second.

Los Blancos are now the record winners of the UEFA Super Cup, surpassing eternal rivals Barcelona and Serie A giants AC Milan (5), as they lift their sixth title.

Key match details

Real Madrid started with a pop, with Mbappe and Vinicius Jr creating danger on the left flank. Atalanta coped with the threat, however, and soon found joy in offensive transitions.

The first half was cagey, with La Dea slightly the better side on the balance of play, but they struggled to truly hurt Los Blancos offensively, with Lookman cutting a lone figure in offensive situations.

The second-half saw a much improved showing from Los Blancos. The offensive quartet of Vinicius, Rodrygo, Mbappe and Jude Bellingham functioned more effectively and they soon landed a telling blow.

Juan Musso kept Atalanta in the game with save after save, but he could do little to prevent Valverde from tapping into an empty net around the hour mark after Vinicius played him through on goal.

The second goal came less than ten minutes later when Bellingham teed up Kylian Mbappe. The former PSG forward fired into the top right corner amid traffic to put some assuredness on the scoreline.

Both teams had chances to score after Kylian’s goal, but the scoreline remained unchanged as Real Madrid strutted to a historic Super Cup win.
