Pep Guardiola has described Manchester City's rivalry with Real Madrid as one of the greatest in modern Champions League history.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola believes that his side's rivalry with Real Madrid has become one of the defining clashes of the modern Champions League era.

The two teams will meet in the knockout stages of the competition for the fourth consecutive season, with the first leg taking place at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday.

Guardiola addresses Real Madrid rivalry

Guardiola acknowledged the historical significance of Real Madrid in the Champions League but highlighted the frequency with which City and Real have met in recent years, suggesting that their encounters have become a modern-day "derby".

"In terms of the last decade yeah, maybe, because it's not normal to play the same rival all the time," Guardiola told reporters.

"In terms of history, Champions League, at the end we cannot compare to be honest against Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Barcelona or AC Milan. This kind of group.

"In the last decade, we have been around. In the last years, the draw, we play against them."

City have a mixed record against Real Madrid in the Champions League, having won four, drawn five and lost three of their 12 meetings.

They were knocked out by Los Blancos in the quarter-finals last season after a thrilling 4-4 draw over two legs before Carlo Ancelotti’s side progressed on penalties.

Guardiola is confident that City can overcome Real Madrid this time around. He believes that his team has something special and is capable of beating anyone on their day.

However, he also acknowledged that City have been inconsistent this season and will need to be at their best to progress to the last 16.

"To be honest, it is always better to have a second leg at home in case you have extra time with your people,” said the City manager.

"We play the second game away because we were not good in the group stage - when you finish 22nd you cannot ask for any favours.

"In football you have to deserve it - we do not deserve it. We were not even close. That's why when the draw was either Bayern Munich or Real Madrid, I thought that is what we deserve.

The reverse fixture will be played at Santiago Bernabeu eight days after Tuesday’s encounter.
