The Golden Eaglets opened their campaign in the tournament on Sunday by defeating Zambia 1-0 at the Mohamed Hamlaoui Stadium in Constantine.

Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) President Ibrahim Gusau has challenged the Golden Eaglets to go for another three points in their 2023 Africa U-17 Cup of Nations clash with Morocco.

The Golden Eaglets opened their campaign in the tournament on Sunday by defeating Zambia 1-0 at the Mohamed Hamlaoui Stadium in Constantine.

Go all out against Morocco - NFF President Gusau

Having defeated South Africa 2-0 in the second Group match on Sunday, Morocco went top of the group, pushing the Golden Eaglets to the second position.

Ahead of Nigeria's clash with the Moroccans, the NFF chief has urged that the team should attempt to secure qualification from the group stage, by aiming for all three points.

“Let me start by congratulating you on your victory over Zambia on Sunday. It was a tough game but your quality showed in your ability to pick the three points. However, nothing has been won yet," Gusau said during a visit to the team camp in Constantine on Monday night.

"You must go all out against Morocco to achieve victory and bounce back to the top of the group.

“It is important to assure of your qualification to the knock-out rounds early so that you avoid all kinds of permutations before the last match of the group phase. Nigerians are watching and supporting you in scores of millions and you cannot afford to disappoint our people.”

Teams aiming for semifinals

The 12-nation tournament will see the top two teams from each of the three groups, advance to the quarter-finals, alongside the best two third-placed teams.

The quarterfinals will then produce four semifinalists, who will also automatically qualify as Africa's representatives at this year's FIFA U-17 World Cup holding in Peru.

Nigeria are two-time champions of the U-17 AFCON having won the competition in 2001 and 2007, and five-time champions of the FIFA U-17 World Cup.
