Kenya U18 midfielder has sealed a move to Croatian Hajduk Split to the delight of Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba who feels he will thrive in Europe.

Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba is among those thrilled with Kenya U18 midfielder Tyron Kariuki’s transfer to Croatian club Hajduk Split.

Kariuki left the country on Sunday to link up with the Gennaro Gattuso-coached team as he begins his professional career and reports say he will play with the second-string side before he graduates to the senior team.

The youngster was one of the star players for Kenya as they reached the CECAFA U18 final in 2023 before losing out to Uganda and had attracted interest from Spain’s Nastic Sports Academy but an agreement with his club Rainbow FC was not reached.

“The world, your oyster. Go rock the globe lad. #TyroneKariuki,” Namwamba posted on social media.

Kariuki was to join Kenya’s Emerging Stars for the COSAFA Cup in South Africa but did not link up with the squad, raising eyebrows.

It later emerged that he stayed behind to finalise a move to the Croatian club, becoming the latest Kenyan youngster to join paid ranks abroad.

In Split, Kariuki will hope to quickly work his way up and join Gattuso’s side in the top tier where they finished third last season.

The club has won the Croatian league title six times, the last of which arrived in 2005, and claimed the Croatian Cup eight times, winning the last one in 2023. Hajduk Split play at the 33,987-seater Stadion Poljud.
