The Confederation of African Football selects Kenyan referee duo for key West African showdown.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has appointed Kenyan referee Peter Waweru Kamaku and his compatriot Gilbert Kipkoech Cheruiyot to oversee the crucial 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier clash between Ghana and the Central African Republic.

The highly anticipated match is scheduled to take place at the iconic Baba Yara Stadium on Thursday, September 7, 2023.

The West African powerhouse, Ghana, and the determined Central African Republic side will be battling it out on the pitch for a coveted spot in the AFCON tournament set to grace Ivory Coast's stadiums in January 2024.

The lead referee for this significant encounter will be none other than the distinguished Peter Waweru Kamaku, an individual who has seamlessly balanced his passion for football with an academic career of note.

Waweru, at the age of 40, holds a doctorate degree in Pure Mathematics and has dedicated his expertise to educating young minds as a university lecturer.

His journey from the lower leagues of Kenyan football to the international stage showcases his unwavering dedication and growth within the sport.

Assisting Waweru on the sidelines will be fellow Kenyan Gilbert Kipkoech Cheruiyot, reinforcing the Kenyan duo's collective prowess.

To ensure a seamless and fair match, the fourth official for the game will be Omar Abdulkadir Artan, hailing from Somalia.

The match commissioner will beSanusi Mohammed from Nigeria, while Fatou Gaye takes on the role of referees' assessor.

Christiana Baah will be the medical officer overseeing the players' welfare, and Ghana FA Executive Council member Frederick Acheampong has been entrusted with the position of match coordinator.

Peter Waweru Kamaku's rise within the football officiating ranks has been impressive.

Starting as a referee for lower league matches in Kenya back in 2011, his determination and commitment to honing his craft saw him ascend through the ranks.

In 2013, he was invited to officiate matches in the Kenyan Premier League, and by 2017, he had earned the prestigious title of a FIFA referee.

His illustrious career boasts a range of international tournaments, including the AFCON U20 in 2019, AFCON 2019 in Egypt, the 2019 U17 World Cup in Brazil, and the 2021 CHAN, where he officiated the final match.

Furthermore, Waweru's expertise has extended to the CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup, as well as World Cup qualifying matches since 2017.
