The brewers will be looking to forget their painful league title loss to Gor Mahia by beating a resilient Kakamega Homeboyz in the final on Saturday.

Robert Matano will be hoping his ‘witchdoctor' in the words of Kakamega Homeboyz owner Cleophas Shimanyula will work his magic when his Tusker side face a tough Kakamega Homeboyz in the final of the Mozzartbet Cup at the Kasarani Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Tusker missed out on the FKF Premier League title by one point at the expense of bitter rivals Gor Mahia.

Matano will not want to miss out on two trophies in one week and will want to leave Tusker on a high, with victory also set to qualify them for continental football for the first time since 2021.

Speculation has suggested that Matano is not going to extend his stay at the club after the end of his contract, with Bandari heavily interested in acquiring his signature.

En route to the final, the brewers started by brushing aside Berlin FC 7-0 at the Kasarani Annex in the round of 32. They came from behind to beat Rainbow 3-2,  before beating KCB 2-0 at the Police Sacco stadium.

They needed a last-minute header in the semi-finals against Ulinzi Stars at the Nyayo National Stadium to seal a date with Homeboyz, who beat AFC Leopards 2-0 at the same venue on the same day.

Matano stresses he is expecting a tough match, but optimistic his boys are capable of beating them.

“Every team is ready for whatever opponent but we will know at the end of the day. It will not be an easy team. We have been playing hard games throughout. We know Homeboyz are not going to be easy," said Matano.

“We are expecting a hard game, but we will win that hard game.”

Homeboyz have been the tournament’s most prolific side, with the highlight game being the 6-1 win over Kariobangi Sharks at the Kasarani Stadium in April.

Under head coach Patrick Odhiambo, they have created a reputation for being dangerous in transitional situations, relying on the pace of Kevin Amwayi on the flanks. Moses Shummah has also been a handful upfront, holding up the ball and linking play, allowing Amwayi to run in behind and cause havoc.

They have also slayed large giants along the way, including Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards.

They will, however, be facing a very mean Tusker defence, with Matano opting for a 4-4-2 formation off the ball. The formation gives Tusker a low-block shape that opponents find difficult to break as witnessed when the two teams last faced each other with Matano's men winning by a solitary goal.

Should Homeboyz win the cup, it will make it the first time in their history that they have lifted the trophy, and subsequently qualify for their maiden continental competition.

“It's a very important cup since it will be a first ever trophy for us which will be historic. It will also be a first trophy for a lot of players. It is very important for us."
