The two players feel being family men has added to their motivation, hence a bigger desire to win
Tusker FC defenders Boniface ‘Kajos’ Onyango and Kevin Monyi have explained how being parents has shaped them into better players for the 13-time Kenyan champions.
The two players have been integral to the brewers’ success this season and feel that would not have been the case had they not had families that push and motivate them to play better and record as many wins as possible.
“It (parenthood) makes you grow mentally and become more responsible,” Kajos said on the club’s YouTube channel.
“Just the way you think off the pitch, you also take it to the pitch. On the pitch, you always know someone is going to lose possession and you are ready to cover them instead of complaining.
“You are responsible, you know he will lose possession so you cover him. Even in the house, you know the child will mess up so I will be ready to clean the mess and correct them. It has made me think differently.”
His teammate Monyi, echoed his sentiments, expressing how he is motivated to do better knowing that he will be making his family proud if Tusker won a match.
“Since being a parent, I reason differently now. I understand someone even if they wrong me,” said Monyi.
“Before, I would play for myself and my brothers but now, I play for my immediate family before the extended one. There is a motivation and the way I push myself on the pitch because I want when I go back to the house and they ask me; ‘Have you won?’ I want to say yes.
“So, it gives me that inner joy. They also feel the pain if we don’t win. So, my motivation has gone up, I do much more than I could previously when I was not a parent.”
While Monyi has been an ever-present figure in the Tusker defence this season, Kojos recently just returned to the team, having undergone knee surgery in January.
The two will hope to be involved on Wednesday when Tusker take on Posta Rangers in the Football Kenya Federation Premier League, seeking victory to stay in touch with leaders Gor Mahia, who lead the standings with 67 points, two ahead of the brewers with two matches remaining.
