FKF PL Tusker cede top spot to Gor Mahia after loss to Nzoia

The game had to start late after the kick-off time was delayed following a heavy downpour in Bungoma.

Nzoia Sugar FC stunned Football Kenya Federation Premier League (FKFPL) champions by picking up a 1-0 win at Sudi Stadium on Saturday.

Former Kenya Police FC midfielder James Kibande scored the only goal that separated the two sides after kick-off was delayed due to heavy downpour.

Meanwhile, Kibande came close to breaking the deadlock in the 13th minute when he made a clever run down the left flank and entered rather easily into Tusker’s box, but his final shot let him down as it flew wide.

The Sugar Millers scored the opening goal in the 21st minute from a spot kick. Hasan Beja was brought down by Charles Momanyi, and Kibande rose to the occasion to score and put his side ahead.

Moments after going down, the Brewers attacked relentlessly and came close to getting an equalizer in the 25th minute. However, Nzoia were able to deal with the danger presented, including two quick corners.

A combination between Humphrey Mieno and Eric Otieno resulted in a half-chance for the visitors. After getting the ball from Mieno, Otieno put it into David Odoyo’s path, but the latter was too late to meet the ball in a promising position in the 38th minute.

After Tusker managed to contain Nzoia, Kevin Juma tried to test Brian Bwire from a distance with a powerful shot, but the goalkeeper was equal to the task.

Yasin Sije will blame himself for not extending Nzoia’s lead in the 55th minute. With only Bwire to beat, he failed to find the target from close range.

Robert Matano made three changes in the 65th minute when he brought on Stewart Omondi, Deogratius Ojok, and Shami Kibwana in place of Otieno, Lawrence Luvanda, and Shaphan Oyugi.

The home side responded by making a change of their own in the 57th minute when Beja was replaced by Steve Otieno.

Kibwana almost made his introduction felt immediately, but he just sent his shot slightly wide from the edge of the box in the 70th minute.

Humphrey Katasi’s spectacular save in the 80th minute denied Tusker a perfect chance to equalize. Ojok took a brilliant volleyed shot from the edge of the box, but the goalkeeper made the save to keep the score in favour of the Sugar Millers.

The Brewers thought they had scored in the 83rd minute, but Jackson Macharia’s goal was ruled out.

Nzoia Sugar frustrated the defending champions, held tight despite a late onslaught, and emerged winners.
