As it happened

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola did not make any change to his team that won 3-0 in the first leg while Thomas Tuchel made just one change to his side that lost with Choupo Moting replacing Serge Gnabry in the starting lineup.

Bayern Munich started the game on the front foot as they created two chances in the space of ten minutes. In the 19th minute, Manchester City embarked on their first real attack as Bernardo Silva showed great footwork to evade tackles and get inside the box before finding Kevin de Bruyne, whose cross at the near post was held by Yann Sommer.

Bayern Munich went close to opening the scoring in the 21st minute as Leroy Sane was sent through on goal and had just Ederson to beat, he tried to clip it in at the far post but it went wide of the post.

The game became intense as Upamecano was sent off for fouling Haaland who went through on goal. However, Referee Clément Turpin immediately rescinded the decision after the flag went up on the far side.

Manchester City later got a penalty in the 37th minute after Dayot Upamecano was penalised for handling the ball from a shot in the box. Haaland stood over the ball, picked his spot and smashed the ball over the bar.

A few minutes before the half-time break, Bayern saw another chance as the ball falls to Kingsley Coman inside the box, he had sight of the goal but Ederson had the angle covered.

The second started with a bit of intensity from both sides but nothing was carved out by both team, not until the 57th minute when Ederson pulls off a great save to deny Bayern Munich and John Stones immediately starts a quick break as he launches the ball upfield, Kevin de Bruyne breaks forward with Erling Haaland in support. De Bruyne makes the pass and then Dayot Upamecano slips at the crucial moment to allow Haaland to smash in.

The game looked like it was City’s to take but Bayern got an equaliser in the 83rd minute when Manuel Akanji was said to have handled the ball. It was reviewed by VAR and checked by the referee who gave the penalty. Joshua Kimmich slams the spot kick down the middle and Bayern gets an equaliser.

Bayern put more pressure at the dying stage of the game but were unable to get the winner as Manchester City set up a semi-final clash with Real Madrid.
