Tottenham's Rodrigo Bentancur has been ruled out of the rest of the season
Tottenham’s quest for a top-four finish in the Premier League has received a major blow with the news that midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur will miss up to six months with an ACL injury.
Bentancur to miss the rest of the 2022/23 season
Bentancur was taken off in Tottenham’s embarrassing 4-1 defeat to Leicester in the Premier League on Saturday, and further tests have shown that he damaged his ACL during the game.
Bentancur avoided the use of a stretcher when coming off during the Leicester game, leading many to believe a short-to-medium-term layoff was on the cards, but it now appears that he will miss up to six months of action.
As a result, Bentancur will now miss the rest of the 2022/23 season, and a return date of August at the earliest has been set for the Uruguayan midfielder.
Tottenham’s growing injury concerns
Bentancur’s injury is the latest in a spate of concerns that have plagued Tottenham in recent weeks.
Tottenham have already been rocked by the news that Guinean midfielder Yves Bissouma will have to undergo surgery for a stress fracture on his leg and will be out for an indefinite period, and is also unlikely to return this season.
Spurs will also be without first-choice goalkeeper Hugo Lloris for the next eight weeks, which will include UEFA Champions League ties against AC Milan, as well as Premier League games against Chelsea and direct rivals Newcastle United.
Even Tottenham’s manager, Antonio Conte, has been sidelined after undergoing surgery to remove his gall bladder in recent weeks, and he more than anybody else will be keen for Spurs to get over their hoo-doo.
