In their first game without star forward Harry Kane, Tottenham battled to a 2-2 draw against neighbours Brentford
Tottenham played their first game without Harry Kane since the former club captain’s move to Bayern Munich and were held 2-2 by Brentford in the first London derby of the season.
Tottenham took the lead in coach Ante Postecoglu’s first game in charge though Christian Romero but were pegged back by goals from Bryan Mbeumo and Yoanne Wissa, who have Brentford a first half lead.
Spurs were able to claw back an equaliser midway through the second half thanks to Emerson Royal’s super effort.
How it happened
Tottenham took the lead when Romero headed in a pin point cross from a James Maddison free kick, leaving many to wonder what wonders the England midfielder could have created for Kane if they eventually played together for Spurs.
Despite going down to an early goal, Brentford fought to level the game and were rewarded for their efforts when Tottenham’s Son Heung-Min fouled Mathias Jensen and the Bees were awarded a penalty after consultation with VAR.
In the absence of Ivan Toney, who is still serving a ban for a breach of gambling rules, Cameroonian forward Bryan Marymount stepped up to convert the spot kick for Brentford.
The Bees took the lead before the break as Yoane Wissa standing in for Toney made it 2-1 to the hosts with a well executed finish to give Brentford hope of starting the 2023/24 season with a derby day victory over Tottenham.
That hope was crushed in the second half however as Brazilian full-back Emerson Royal rifled home a stunning effort from outside the 18-yard box to bring Spurs back level.
A late flurry of chances for Tottenham greeted the end of the match, but without the finishing prowess of Kane, they all went begging as both sides settled for a 2-2 draw.
