The Italian tactician, who took over the reins at Stamford Bridge this summer, has already overseen a significant overhaul of the squad.
Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has downplayed the importance of securing a top-four finish in the Premier League this season, stating that the club's primary focus is on long-term development.
The Italian tactician, who took over the reins at Stamford Bridge this summer, has already overseen a significant overhaul of the squad. While the Blues have shown glimpses of promise, they have also faced inconsistency.
"The club never mentioned to me about top four. They always mentioned to me the target was to build something important for the next four or five years," Maresca told reporters.
He further emphasised that the team's focus is on each game individually rather than setting long-term targets.
"If you start to think about top four or top six, you are thinking about June and for me, it's too far," he added.
Why I didn't play Sancho at Newcastle - Maresca
Regarding the recent lack of playing time for Jadon Sancho, Maresca explained that it was a tactical decision due to the demanding fixture schedule. He assured the winger that he will have more opportunities to showcase his talent in the future.
"Jadon has been doing well since he arrived. He will play many games and the only thing he has to do is continue to work hard and when we give him a chance, he has to take it," Maresca said.
Newcastle will host Chelsea at the St James park in the Carabao (EFL) Cup on Wednesday.
