The Red Devils experienced a calamitous exit from the Europa League on Thursday.

After succumbing to a 3-0 thumping at the hands of Sevilla, Manchester United set unwanted records in the Europa League.

After throwing away a 2-0 lead at Old Trafford, the Red Devils set themselves up for a tough tie in the return leg, and Sevilla grabbed the advantage as they progressed with a 5-2 aggregate win.

After the defeat – which ended their dream of a treble, United registered unwanted records in the second-tier European club competition.

This is the first time the Red Devils have been eliminated at the quarter-final stages of the Europa League, having progressed from each of their three such ties before Thursday.

They have won none of their five games against Sevilla in major European competition (D2 L3), the most they have faced a side without ever winning in their European history.

For a sixth successive season, United have been eliminated from a European knockout tie by Spanish opposition - with three of those coming against Sevilla (2017-18, 2019-20, and 2022-23).

Meanwhile, since the competition's rebranding in 2009-10, Sevilla have made the semi-final of the Europa League on more occasions than any other side (5). On the previous four occasions, they have reached the semi-finals they have gone on to win the competition (2013-14, 2014-15, 2015-16 & 2019-20).

The defeat in South Spain is a painful outcome for United and their fans, as the club had somewhat shown their capability of challenging on multiple fronts, before the latest setback.

Just a few months ago, United ended their six-year trophy drought by beating Newcastle United to win the Carabao Cup.

But after the Carabao Cup success, United were outclassed 7-0 by Liverpool before another defeat – in a very crucial tie – came at the hands of Newcastle. The Magpies are United’s top-four rivals and managed a 2-0 victory.

Despite seeing their treble dream come to an end, Christian Eriksen, Bruno Fernandes, and Casemiro are all available which gives United a glimmer of hope.

In the matches the three have played together this season, the Red Devils have not lost. In 17 games, there have been two draws and 15 victories when the midfield trio started alongside one another.
