Harambee Stars coach Benni McCarthy is a hero in South Africa and fans want him to be their next Bafana Bafana coach.

Newly-appointed Harambee Stars coach Benni McCarthy is barely three weeks into his reign as Kenya's national team tactician but South African fans are already plotting for his exit.

After just a week of training with the local-based players in the minicamp, and one training session with abroad-based players, Benni McCarthy managed a 3-3 draw with The Gambia in his first-ever Harambee Stars assignment.

While the six-goal thriller was not the respectable scoreline expected in the high-octane match, McCarthy's tactical acumen and attacking brand of football has made adoring football fans from his home country crave for him to coach Bafana Bafana.

McCarthy, a Champions League winner with FC Porto as a player, is held in high awe back home. As reported by Goal.com, South Africans want McCarthy to be Bafana Bafana's long-term solution.

"Depending on which angle you are viewing my comment. Benni will soon be the next Bafana Bafana head coach. This experience is bigger than money," Mafiswana Tito Msebeni said.

The fans further expressed their admiration for instilling a bulletproof mentality on his players despite initial setbacks against The Gambia. They further opined that by accepting to take charge of Harambee Stars, McCarthy embraces challenges and offers solutions head-on.

"When Gambia was leading 2-0 I knew Kenya would come back as I know Benni's never-die attitude, and the fact that he embraces challenges, that is McCarthy for you, and please look at Kenya climbing the table from now onwards. Benni is a champion,"  Lunga Mbongwa added.

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos is expected to quit after the 2026 World Cup, further fuelling South Africa's desire to have McCarthy on board as soon as possible.

Benni McCarthy's contract as the head coach of Harambee Stars is a two-year deal, extending until after the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations

McCarthy was officially unveiled as the new Harambee Stars tactician in an upbeat ceremony at the Serena Hotel on Monday, March 3
