Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez under fire for alleged racist Chant: FFF files complain

Chelsea FC midfielder Enzo Fernandez has sparked controversy after a video surfaced showing members of the Argentine national team allegedly engaging in a racist chant aimed at their French counterparts.

The incident, captured following Argentina's Copa America victory over Colombia on Sunday, has prompted swift condemnation from various quarters, including the French Football Federation (FFF).

In the video, which has since gone viral, Argentine players are heard singing lyrics that describe French footballers as being 'from Angola' and making derogatory remarks about their ancestry and sexuality, specifically targeting French star Kylian Mbappé.

The chant, reportedly originating from the 2022 World Cup final where Argentina faced off against France, has been deemed as racially insensitive and discriminatory by critics.

The chant translated

'Listen, spread the word. They play in France, but they are all from Angola. How nice it is! They are going to run. They are 'cometravas'* like f***ing Mbappé. Their mom is Nigerian. Their dad, Cameroonian. But in the document ...Nationality, French.

'*'Cometravas' is a slang term that loosely translates to somebody who has sex with transgender people.

Wesley Fofana, Fernandez's teammate at Chelsea and a French international of Ivorian descent, took to social media to denounce the video, labelling it as 'uninhibited racism.'

The FFF, led by president Philippe Diallo, has announced its intention to file a legal complaint with FIFA over what they describe as 'insulting remarks of a racial and discriminatory nature.'

Chelsea Football Club has initiated an investigation into the matter, affirming their commitment to addressing the issue seriously and taking appropriate actions as necessary.

The club, known for its diverse roster that includes several French players of African descent, is navigating the fallout of the incident amidst widespread public outrage and media scrutiny.

The controversy underscores ongoing challenges within the football community regarding racism and discrimination, highlighting the need for continued vigilance and accountability in combatting such behavior both on and off the field.
