Benin Republic striker Steve Mounie mentioned their key advantage over the Super Eagles.

The Super Eagles of Nigeria suffered a shocking 2-1 defeat to Benin Republic. Given Nigeria’s lethargic performance, the comments made by the Cheetahs’ point man Steve Mounie ahead of the match about the key advantage they had over Nigeria were brought to the fore.

What Mounie said

Speaking ahead of the game, Mounie explained that they had an extra day of rest compared to Nigeria, suggesting they would be more refreshed and fitter for the game.

Nigeria played South Africa on June 7th, while Benin, their opponent yesterday, played their other World Cup qualifier game against Rwanda on the 6th, one day before the Super Eagles’ draw at Uyo.

“The advantage is that we had one more day of recovery than Nigeria,” Mounie said before the match, per Brila.

Steve Mounie proved right

Although Nigeria grabbed the lead through Raphael Onyedika and looked by far the better side in the opening exchanges, Benin roared back against a languid Super Eagles and walked away with maximum points.

Jodel Dossou got the equaliser in the 27th minute and just before half-time, Brest striker Mounie, capitalised on a defence mishap from the Nigerian backline, pounced and gave Gernot Rohr’s side the lead.

The Super Eagles pushed for an equaliser, but the Beninoiss held on and earned maximum points which sent them to the top of Group C.
